Recent neuroscience breakthroughs show that most chronic pain results from the brain misinterpreting safe messages from the body as if they were dangerous. Research has found that the brain has the power to generate pain even in the absence of physical damage.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a system of psychological techniques that retrains the brain to accurately interpret and respond to signals from the body, breaking the cycle of chronic pain. Although various treatments aim to manage pain, PRT stands apart as an evidence-based treatment to eliminate pain.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a system of psychological techniques that retrains the brain to interpret and respond to signals from the body properly, subsequently breaking the cycle of chronic pain.
Recent studies indicate that chronic conditions such as back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injury, headaches, and other types of persistent pain are often not due to structural issues. Instead, they stem from psychophysiological processes that can be reversed, a phenomenon known as neuroplastic pain.

Pain serves as a danger signal for our bodies. When we injure ourselves, our body sends messages to the brain indicating tissue damage, which we then perceive as pain. However, there are times when the brain misinterprets these signals. Neuroplastic pain occurs when the brain mistakenly interprets safe messages from the body as threatening, resulting in a false alarm.
It’s important to note that while the pain can be addressed from a psychological perspective, this does not mean the pain is imaginary. In fact, brain imaging studies have shown that the pain we experience is very real. Recent research suggests that pain often arises from learned neural pathways in the brain. Just as pain can be learned, it can also be unlearned.
